Leveraging Technology Innovation & Enterprise to Enhance Built Environment Productivity

Synopsis


Covid-19 has disrupted the Built Environment (BE), but has also presented opportunities to accelerate tech adoption and embrace research and innovation. In shaping the future of the BE, there is strong impetus to drive greater digitalization, automation in the BE sector, and develop innovative solutions for a sustainable and resilient environment.

Through the inaugural I&E webinar, expert speakers will share strategies, innovation programmes and ‘ready-to-go’ solutions to support BE sector in their transformation journey – as BE companies focus on building research and innovation capabilities. Technology solution providers have also been invited to share their experiences (and learning points) in working with agencies to translate, deploy and proliferate tech innovation.


About the Speakers


Dr. Ng Hsiao Piau

Dr. Ng Hsiao Piau is a Programme Director at Building and Construction Authority (BCA) Built Environment Research and Innovation Institute (BERII). He heads the Advanced Construction & Innovation Planning Department which oversees the BE Robotics and Cities of Tomorrow R&D Programmes and support various research and innovation efforts in Robotics & Automation, and Advanced Construction Materials. The department also manages the BE Living Lab Framework and Building Innovation Panel who facilitates test-bedding and deployment of innovative solutions. Hsiao Piau holds a PhD and Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering from National University of Singapore, and did his post-doctoral training at Harvard University. He was a recipient of the A*STAR Graduate Scholarship (PhD) and A*STAR Graduate Scholarship (Post-Doc).

 

Mr. Heru Santoso Soedarsono

Heru has vast experience in the area of research and development to bring about implementation of innovative solutions for greater sustainability in Singapore’s public housing. He is currently the Director of Centre of Building Research overseeing test-bedding of R&D initiatives, managing HDB’s intellectual property (IP) and technology transfer services of HDB’s patents, as well as facilitating collaborative alliances with the industry through the HDB Cool Ideas Enterprise platform. His current focus is in the large-scale deployment of smart and sustainable solutions under the HDB Green Town programme to improve sustainability and liveability of existing HDB towns in support of the Singapore Green Plan 2030.

 

Dr. Roland Lim

Dr. Roland Lim Yan Guan has been an active practitioner and research lead in the fields of Digital Transformation, Business Model Innovation, Operations Management and Productivity Improvements in the industry for over 25 years. His research and working experience with industry has enabled him to gain extensive knowledge of the best practices and solutions to lead a team to invent and develop the OMNI Methodology and initiated the OMNI Programme. With OMNI, Dr Roland Lim and team have helped over 300 companies, train more than 1000 productivity champions, and help companies to achieve productivity improvements ranging from 20% to 150%. His accolades include the A*STAR STAR Employee Award, MTI and A*STAR Borderless Awards, and SIMTech-SSG PE WSQ STAR Trainer Award.

 

Mr. Wong Ming Mao

Mr. Wong Ming Mao is currently a Principal Research Engineer and Deputy Director (Industry Development) for the Manufacturing Productivity Technology Centre (MPTC) at SIMTech. His main role is to help local industry to improve productivity and digital transformation through the use of technologies such as RFID, Industry Internet of Things (IIoT), digital technologies, automation, data mining and predictive maintenance. He has spent over 25 years working with local industries focusing primarily in enterprise and shop floor solutions with extensive project management, research and industrial experience in numerous enterprise and mission-critical applications such as automated airfreight control and self-recovery system for SATS Airfreight Terminal 6. He is a Certified Industrial Automation Consultant with SIAA since 1995 and holds a Master degree in Mechanical Engineering.

 

Mr. Jean Christophe Li

Jean Christophe Li is the co-founder/CEO of Aespada, a Singapore-based Construction Technology company with the vision to digitalize material logistics for the Built Environment. He graduated with a MSc from Nanyang Technological University and has over 12 years working experience in the Construction Industry.

 

Mr. Chuan Yuen Shen

Shen is a multi-disciplinary engineer and the CEO of Hocklim Engineering. Hocklim holds an extensive portfolio from drainage construction to geotechnical work. Under Shen’s leadership, the company has expanded its offerings and developed various innovative construction technologies, from GeoBarrier System to Automatic Flood Barriers to IoT Controlled Flood Gates with Detention Drain System with the close collaboration of various government agencies, Enterprise SG, HDB and PUB.

Previously serving as the Chief Engineer at Penta-Ocean, Shen has integrated technical knowledge and management skills and implemented projects such as Construction of a Containment Bund at F2.

His diverse experience and modern/creative allows him to elevate the engineering and construction industry to another level. He hopes to develop more construction technology to aid climate change initiatives. His track record includes research and development of the GeoBarrier System, research and development of Automated Flood Gate with Detention Drain System, research and development of Automated Flood Barrier for U/G Carparks.

Shen is also an Dive Master and Land Rover owner, and frequently travels to explore the nature. Whenever there is rising floodwater, it represents an opportunity to wash the undercarriage of the LR Defender, as well as conducting a drainage survey of the area.

Dr. Lim Ser Yong

Dr Lim Ser Yong is currently a Senior Fellow at the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR). He is the advisor to the USS I&E Working Group of the Enterprise Division of A*STAR to engage the industry in the Urban Solutions and Sustainability (USS) domain. Dr Lim works with many companies as Technology Extension Partners (TEP) to adopt technologies developed by researchers in the IHLs and A*STAR to develop products, solutions, and services to serve end-users in different domains and markets.
