Question by: Ms Diana Pang
To ask the Minister for National Development (a) whether the Ministry will expand the provision of shaded public playgrounds and outdoor play areas, given rising average temperatures in Singapore; and (b) how will such efforts align with the Prime Minister’s National Day Rally 2025 call to reduce excessive screen time for children by encouraging real-world activities and physical play to support healthy development.
Agencies such as HDB and NParks take thermal comfort into consideration when implementing playgrounds and outdoor play areas within HDB estates and parks.
Agencies use tools such as sun-shade analysis, wind modelling and heat mapping, to help decide where to locate playgrounds and provide shade. Agencies also consider locating play spaces in the shadow zone of nearby buildings where feasible and using play equipment materials suited for our tropical climate. The planting of trees and greenery can also help reduce ambient temperatures.
In addition, as part of our City in Nature vision, NParks has developed 40 nature playgardens island-wide to date. These are specially curated nature play areas for children to connect with nature and benefit from outdoor play.
