ADDITIONAL
MEASURES FOR DORMITORY DEVELOPMENT AT THE FORMER SERANGOON
GARDENS TECHNICAL SCHOOL SITE
The Ministry of National Development
has accepted a number of suggestions by the residents of Serangoon
Gardens to mitigate the impact of the dormitory development
at the former Serangoon Gardens Technical School site.
2.
Following the decision in early October
to proceed with a dormitory development at the former Serangoon
Gardens Technical School site, the Member of Parliament for
Aljunied GRC, Mrs Lim Hwee Hua, had highlighted a list of
measures suggested by the residents for adoption by the dormitory
operator.
3.
MND has agreed to adopt many of the suggestions.
Some of these include providing plantings to screen the road
from the nearest residential developments, locating the pick
up and drop off point within the premises, and ensuring no
mass activities after 10.30pm.
4.
One of the additional measures suggested
by residents is a direct ramp on and off the south-bound CTE
at the closest point to the site, instead of the entrance
via the slip road and exit via Ang Mo Kio Ave 1.
5.
LTA has studied this suggestion in detail,
and concluded that such a configuration is not feasible on
safety grounds. LTA has explained that there is not enough
distance along the stretch of the CTE between Ang Mo Kio Ave
1 and Ang Mo Kio Ave 3 to fit in a proper acceleration and
deceleration lane to allow a direct entry and exit from the
CTE to the dormitory site. Furthermore, if the road is realigned
as suggested, pedestrians and cyclists from the dormitory
will be forced to walk or ride along the CTE when they leave
or return to the dormitory. This will put their personal safety
at risk.
6.
MND will continue to work closely with
the Advisor and with grassroots leaders of Serangoon Gardens
on the implementation of the dormitory.
