Oral Answer by Ministry of National Development to PQ on Heavy Vehicle Parks

6 FEBRUARY 2009

Question by: Mr Charles Chong

Mr Charles Chong asked the Minister for National Development for the number of heavy vehicle parks located within or near HDB estates. He also asked if there were usually waiting lists for season parking at these heavy vehicle parks, especially in new towns such as Sengkang and Punggol, where there are ample vacant land to accommodate such vehicle parks. If so, he asked what measures were being planned to meet the demand.

Answer

1     There is currently an island-wide supply of more than 42,000 parking lots to meet the overnight parking needs of 21,510 registered heavy vehicles. More than 12,000 of these lots are located within or near HDB estates. The remaining 30,000 lots are available in industrial estates.

2     Demand for heavy vehicle parking lots in or near HDB estates is high and there are waiting lists for season parking in HDB estates, including new towns such as Sengkang and Punggol.

3     However, we cannot keep building heavy vehicle parks in or near residential estates, as this would cause disamenities to the majority of the residents in the estates.

4     There is more than enough heavy vehicle parking spaces island-wide. Residents who are not able to secure heavy vehicle parking lots near their residences would have already secured parking lots at their work places like factories and at designated parking places outside HDB estates. They can continue to park at these locations.
