In her five years at the Pulau Ubin Branch of the Conservation Division, Ms Adelle Wang has contributed much to improve the Conservation’s outreach programmes and guided tours for the public, and also in garnering the support of a loyal and growing group of volunteers who help to sustain Pulau Ubin’s conservation efforts.
She initiated a yearly Chek Jawa Exploration trip for the volunteers to get together for team bonding and to further enhance their knowledge, for example, by exposing them to animals in their natural habitats and environment. Much effort are put into these trips as Adelle would have to take into consideration factors such as low or high tides, in order to meet the trip’s objectives of the trip. Her initiatives were never compromised even if it means working over the weekends and overnights.
She is also friends with the villagers at Pulau Ubin, who help to host the volunteers in their own homes during the orientation programme. On her end, she readily offers help when the villagers approach her to translate documents from English to Chinese.
Adelle prefers a personal touch when communicating with her volunteer group, who has now grown close to her and the rest at Ubin. When she knows that her volunteers are coming to Ubin and are staying fairly near to her, she will sometimes call them up and offer a ride from their homes to Ubin, understanding that travelling for them could be a hassle as Ubin is rather inaccessible. Adelle‘s main interaction with the volunteers has impressed many along the way. To them, she is like a mother to the group.
