RELIEF PACKAGE FOR THE LOCAL DUCK SLAUGHTERHOUSES AND AFFECTED STALLS IN THE GOVERNMENT WET MARKETS
The recent import suspension of poultry and poultry products from the State of Perak, Peninsula Malaysia, has affected the business of the local duck slaughterhouses and stallholders selling ducks in the Government wet markets.
The Housing & Development Board (HDB) and JTC Corporation (JTC) will waive rental for the four duck slaughterhouse tenants with effect from 16 Mar 2006. Similarly, the National Environment Agency (NEA) will grant a 50% waiver in rents for stallholders selling ducks in Government wet markets with effect from the same date.
In view of this exceptional situation, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) will also allow a temporary waiver of the levy for the foreign workers from the four duck slaughterhouses with effect from 16 Mar 2006.
The Government is providing the assistance not as compensation but as a form of relief for the duck slaughterhouses and affected stallholders. The relief package is estimated to cost the Government around $88,000.
MOM, HDB and JTC will inform the four duck slaughterhouses accordingly. NEA will also inform the stallholders eligible for the waiver individually.
The AVA is monitoring the bird flu situation and will advise on the lifting of the import suspension at a later date.
